Aim of Work Experience
The main aim for students undertaking a Work Experience Placement is to assist in preparing them with their future career choice, and allows them to experience the workplace first hand. It allows students to experience a variety of different occupations and whether or not they are suited for that particular field.
Who can undertake Work Experience?
Students in Year 10 undertake a core unit of study titled Pathways. One of the Work Requirements for satisfactory completion is to find a one week Work Experience Placement and to submit to their class teacher the completed Work Experience Assignment which requires students to conduct and interview and investigate various aspects of the industry they are working in.
Work Experience Database
The Careers Department has an extensive Data Base of previous Work Experience Placements that students can utilise to assist in their search for a suitable placement. Students should also utilise family networks, but ensure that they are not supervised by a parent or relative – you may however work in the same building. Students can also use newspapers (local and daily), telephone directories, local businesses and shopping centres.
Workcover & Payment
The satisfactory completion of the Work Experience Arrangement Form ensures that students will be paid a minimum payment of $5.00 per day by the employer and covers the student for Workcover. Certain organisations are exempt from this and includes non profit Charitable organisations eg. kindergartens and Commonwealth Government Departments. During the one week placement students are visited by one of their teachers to ascertain how they are enjoying the experience, whether they are coping with the demands of the work place and to remind them to complete the Work Experience Assignment.
